Anti-Discrimination Statement

Kirkland EMDR Counseling is a practice that believes in inclusivity, healthy boundaries, and curiosity.

Kirkland EMDR Counseling acknowledges that:

  • We currently live in a society with systems that perpetuate trauma and white supremacy on bodies of all shapes, genders, sizes, locations, and colors. No person is unaffected by trauma of these systems and disconnection to their fellow humans due to them.

  • A person lives in the environment, therefore healing is both internal and external in nature and process. Individual and collective healing is therefore part of the journey of healing.

  • Awareness of how these systems impact us at the individual and collective level is important to dismantling both the systems as well as the shame and pain humans carry as a result of living in a society where these systems are present.

  • Many of the practices within the Mental Health field have been around long before the term mental health existed, as cultural practices, community support, and rituals around the world.

Kirkland EMDR is committed to:

  • Inclusivity

    • Holding conversations on the marginalization of intersectional identities as a part of individual and collective healing in the therapeutic space.

    • Offering quality therapy services without discrimination on the basis of identity (race, gender, or any other identities a person may hold) and taking responsibility of any harm experienced, whether intentional or not, to take concrete steps towards reparation.

    • Having a number of reduced fee counseling slots to increase accessibility to mental health services.

    • Hiring therapists who hold various intersectional identities, are trauma-informed, and practice from an anti-oppression and anti-racist lens.

    • Providing support, consultation, or mentorship to the community to support community/collective growth and healing.

  • Equity

    • By acknowledging and actively seeking to dismantle systems of racism and oppression to ensure equitable access to resources.

    • Evaluating our internal functioning and structures for any potential biases and oppressive practices

    • Receiving organizational feedback through internal and external ways that can be easily accessible to our community

  • Healthy Boundaries

    • Creating private and safe spaces to explore experiences, emotions, and express vulnerability in the therapeutic space for both clients and therapists.

    • Continually assessing the influence of privilege and oppression clients and therapists experiences to inform boundary setting in a healthy way.

    • Communicating in an understandable manner and providing several channels of communication that work for both clients and therapists.

  • Curiosity

    • Having conversations that are honest, hard, and vulnerable that lean towards getting to know more rather than assumptions/judgement.

    • Engaging in regular training, consultation, or workshops led by people who hold various intersectional identities.

    • Learning the most up to date counseling techniques and practices for the various experiences clients experience within their communities.
